Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Mon Oct 30 09:34:30 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 13286-5:2003 (E) 5 1 Scope This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the maximum dry density and water content of cohesionless materials when compacted using a

、vibrating table. The method utilizes vibratory compaction to obtain maximum density under saturated conditions. Materials for which this method is applicable may contain up to 12 % by mass fines ( 80 mm and weigh them. Record their mass S. 7 Procedure Weigh the empty mould with the surcharge base pl

、ate and record the mass U. Determine the maximum density as follows. If water is added to the dry material allow a sufficient soaking period. For traditional road materials the soaking period shall be at least 30 min. Fill the mould with moist material by means of a shovel. Add sufficient water to t

、he material to allow a small amount of free water to accumulate on the surface of the material during filling. During and just after filling the mould, vibrate the material for a total of 360 s while the amplitude of the vibrator is reduced as much as necessary to avoid excessive boiling and fluffin

、g of the material. During the final minute of vibration, remove any water appearing above the surface of the material. Fasten the guide sleeve to the surcharge base plate and place them upon the surface of the specimen. Lower the surcharge balance on the surcharge base plate using a tackle arrangeme

、nt. Adjust the amplitude control of the vibratory table so that the amplitude of the mould is (0,40 0,05) mm (half of length of stroke) and vibrate the specimen for (720 15) s. After the vibration period, remove the surcharge balance and guide sleeve from the mould. Measure the distance from the top

、 of the mould to the surcharge base plate by slide gauge at four locations. Calculate the average of the four measurements and record the result R. Obtain the measurement so that it is: positive when the plate is below the edge of the mould; and negative when the plate is above the edge. Wipe away a

、ny mud which has appeared on the surcharge base plate and the mould. Weigh the mould together with the surcharge base plate and the vibrated material. Record the mass T. Remove the entire specimen from the mould. Weigh the specimen and record the mass JW. Dry the specimen to constant mass in accorda

、nce with EN 1097-5. Weigh the dried specimen and record the mass mD. Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Mon Oct 30 09:34:30 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 13286-5:2003 (E) 10 8 Calculation and expression of results 8.1Determine the water content by means of the following: w =

、 100 (mW mD)/mD(1) where wis the water content, in percent (%); mWis the wet mass of the material, in grams (g); mDis the mass of the dried material, in grams (g). mW = T U(2) where mWis the wet mass of the material, in grams (g); Tis the total mass of the wet material and the mould and the surcharg

、e base plate, in grams (g); Uis the mass of the mould and the surcharge base plate, in grams (g). 8.2Determine the maximum dry density as follows: d,max = mW/(1 + w/100)VJ(3) where mwis the wet mass of the material, in grams (g); d,maxis the maximum dry density, in megagrams per cubic metre (Mg/m3);

、 VJis the volume of the material, in millilitres (ml). VJ = VF (H + R) Ar; VFis the volume of the mould, in millilitres (ml); Ris the average of the slide gauge readings (with signs) after the vibration period, in millimetres (mm); His the thickness of the surcharge base plate, in millimetres (mm);

、Aris the cross section area of the mould, in square millimetres (mm2). mW = T U(4) mwis the wet mass of the material, in grams (g); Tis the total mass of the wet material and the mould and the surcharge base plate, in grams (g); Uis the mass of the mould and the surcharge base plate, in grams (g). 45、e content by the current water content of the material, in percent (%); Sis the mass of aggregate 80 mm, in kilograms (kg); Pis the mass of the total sample, in kilograms (kg). NOTEs is calculated only for information. d,max is thus not corrected for content of aggregate 80 mm. 9 Test report The tes

、t report shall include at least the following information: a) reference to this European Standard; b) identification of the sample; c) identification of the laboratory; d) date; e) maximum dry density, d,max, in megagrams per cubic metre to two decimal places; f) corresponding water content, w, in p

、ercentage; the determination shall be given to one decimal place; g) aggregate content by the current water content of the material, s 80 mm in percentage. If required, the test report shall include the following optional information: h) name and location of the sample source; i) description of the
