IEC 1300-3, Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components Basic test and measurement procedures

、Part 3: Examinations and measurements. 2 Apparatus The test apparatus shall be capable of applying simultaneously both tension and a torsional load or twisting action to the cable-to-device interface. Figure 1 shows the basic parts of a test apparatus. 2.1 Mounting fixture A mounting fixture for rig

、idly mounting the device under test and holding it in proper alignment throughout the test. The fixture shall allow the device under test to be connected to a source and detector for monitoring attenuation. 2.2 Cable clamp The cable clamp shall be capable of grasping and securing the cable so that i

、t, does not turn or slip in the holder when loads are applied. The clamp shall not crush the optical fibres or cause an unacceptable change in the attenuation. The cable clamp is the point at which the torsional load is applied. The cable clamp may consist of a mandrel around which several turns of

、cable are wrapped and secured. 2.3 Weights Weights or another mechanism for applying a tensile load to the cable clamp are required. 2.4 Torque applicator and gauge If the cable being tested is stiff and a specified torque rather than degrees of rotation is called for, the following shall apply. Tor

、que shall be applied using a torque wrench or equivalent and a torque gauge having a torque range of no more than three times the required torque test value. A maximum reading torque indicator is desired but not required. The gauge shall be accurate within 10 % of the applied torque value. 3 Procedu

、re 3.1 Preparation of specimens Prepare the specimens according to the manufacturers instructions or as specified in the detail specification. 3.2 Pre-conditioning Unless otherwise specified in the detail specification, pre-condition the device under test for 4 h at the standard test conditions spec

、ified in IEC 1300-1. Measure and record the attenuation of the device. 3.3 Mount the device under test The body of the specimen shall be rigidly mounted to a holding plate which is secured in a fixed position (see Figure 1). The clamp to which the load can be applied shall be fastened to the cable i

、n such a manner that the optical fibre or cable is not crushed. Unless otherwise specified, the top of the cable clamp shall be ten times the cable diameter from the end of the strain relief, if used (see Figure 1). If there is no strain relief, the end of the specimen nearest the cable clamp shall

、be the reference. 3.4 Measure the attenuation Re-measure the attenuation to ensure that the fixturing and cable clamping have not affected the cables attenuation beyond the specified acceptable limit. 3.5 Apply cable load Gradually apply the tensile load recommended in Table 1 or as specified in the

、 detail specification to the cable clamping fixture, being careful to avoid any sudden jerking or straining of the cable. 37、ttenuation After the load is applied, re-measure the attenuation of the specimen. This value shall be recorded and used as a reference to determine the effects of the twisting motion. 3.7 Twist the cable Apply a twisting motion to the cable clamping device being careful to control the vertical and h

、orizontal motion of the load. One twist cycle shall consist of motion in one direction, motion in the opposite direction, and return to the original position. Unless otherwise specified, a test cycle shall consist of a twist of 90 in one direction followed by a twist of 180 in the opposite direction

、, and concluding with a twist back to the starting position. Where rigid cable is used, a specified torque value shall be used in place of the degrees of rotation. Repeat the test cycle ten times unless specified otherwise. When more than ten cycles are required, the twist rate shall be 30 cycles pe

、r min, unless specified otherwise. 3.8 Monitor the attenuation Unless otherwise specified in the detail specification, the attenuation of the specimen shall be monitored as described in IEC 1300-3. Any deviation in the device attenuation from that measured in 3.6 shall be considered attributable to

、the cable/device interface, fibre-to-fibre interfaces or fibre-to-source/detector interfaces in the device, NOTEIf there are unacceptable changes in attenuation and it is questionable whether the cable itself may be at fault, a control test to determine cable contribution may be performed in the sam

、e manner using a piece of cable and two cable clamps. 3.9 Final measurements and examinations After the twist portion of the test is complete, remove all fixtures and make a final attenuation measurement to ensure that there is no permanent damage to the device. The results of the final measurement

、shall be within the limit established in the detail specification. Remove the device from the mounting fixture and, unless otherwise specified, visually examine the specimens in accordance with IEC 1300-3-1. Check for evidence of the following: broken, loose or damaged parts or accessories; breaking

、 or damage to the cable jacket, seals, strain relief, or fibres; displaced, bent, broken or chipped parts; scratching of any interface areas.
