3、the amount transported from factory, to shop, to end consumers. Similarly, changes in the costs of plastic resin and price fluctuations of aluminum ingot and steel impact costs also. The packaging industry is a large, fragmented market with thousands of competitors. A large proportion of containers

4、and packaging such as glass bottles and cans are typically undifferentiated products, manufactured en masse, which increases consumer choice and therefore buyer power with respect to these items. On the other hand, many container and packaging items are produced using bespoke designs or materials fo

5、r specific customers, most notably for manufacturers and retailers of food products who intent on using unique designs and materials to encourage consumer interest. These services are typically undertaken under fixed term contacts, as services are individually tailored to meet the needs of the buyer

6、. This increases switching costs for consumers and reduces buyer power. While the packaging industry is FIVE FORCES ANALYSIS France - Containers however, the size of suppliers will vary according to the raw material they sell. With minimal differentiation of commodity raw materials there is little t

7、o distinguish between suppliers and manufacturers therefore low switching costs exist. Often several packaging materials are suitable for a given product therefore providing a degree of substitution between different raw materials. Increasingly, suppliers are diversifying their products to meet chan

8、ging consumer demands which are heavily focused on being planet-friendly. For example, paper packaging solutions are becoming increasingly favored over plastic packaging for many food products and plastic bottles are increasingly substituting glass jars and bottles for many food and beverage product

9、s. Some industry players have backwards integrated to produce their own inputs, which weakens supplier power. One such example is International Paper Company, which operated 20 pulp, paper and packaging mills, 144 converting and packaging plants, and 19 wood products facilities throughout Europe and

10、 the US in 2010. Overall, the supplier power is moderate. FIVE FORCES ANALYSIS France - Containers foam, such as expanded polystyrene foam, extruded polystyrene foam or polyurethane; and hemp, which are marketed worldwide under the Isover brand, in the United States under the CertainTeed brand and i

11、n Japan under the Mag brand. The segments exterior fittings division offers roofing line-up products under the brand CertainTeed for the North-American-style homes. Its Industrial mortars division comprises three business lines: Industrial mortars marketed under the Weber global brand; Expanded clay

12、 pellets, mainly sold under the Leca brand; and Site and plant equipment, supplied through m-tec brand. The segments pipe division supplies piping systems in ductile cast iron, pipe connectors and fittings. Saint-Gobains building distribution segment is involved in distributing building materials, w

13、hich includes plumbing and heating products, and ceramic tiles. The segment serves the building, renovation and interior decoration markets and its customers include builders, architects, interior decorators, DIY enthusiasts and large corporations. 14、urope; and Latin America. The packaging Europe segment includes a system of mills and plants that produce a full line of container board that is converted into corrugated containers. The group has facilities in 21 countries, in both Western and Eastern Europe. On the mill side, the operations consis

15、t of three Kraft liner mills, in Sweden, France and Austria, which produce over 1.5 million tons of brown and white Kraft liner; and 15 recycled containerboard mills which currently produce over 3.0 million tons of paper and a sack kraft paper mill in Spain (transferred from Specialties Europe) whic

16、h produced over 0.1 million tons of paper. SKG also has recovered fiber collection facilities, a wood products business and some wood procurement operations. On the conversion side, the operations comprise of 108 corrugated plants, which currently produce over 4.4 million tones (8.0 billion square m

17、eters) and 54 sheet plants. In addition, the group has 21 plants which produce litho laminated corrugated products, preprint or display units and a number of other small plants producing paper tubes, pallets, fulfillment activities and other packaging solutions. The specialties Europe segment manufa

18、ctures and supplies solid board and solid board packaging, box board, graphic board, sack paper, sacks, bag-in-box, taps, cartons and other related products. It has facilities in 11 countries, with eight mills, eight conversion plants and five bag-in-box plants (including one LEADING COMPANIES Franc

19、e - Containers 26 corrugated plants in six countries with a current production of 0.7 million tones (1.1 billion square meters); one preprint facility; five paper sack converting plants in four countries; three folding carton plants (two in Mexico and one in Venezuela; 25 recovered fiber plants in f

20、ive countries; and forestry operations in Colombia and Venezuela. The groups subsidiaries include: Carton de Colombia, Carton de Venezuela, Grupo Smurfit Mexico, Nettingsdorfer Papierfabrik, Smurfit Kappa Deutschland, Smurfit Kappa Holdings Italia, Smurfit Kappa Investments UK Limited, Smurfit Kappa

21、 Ireland Limited, Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner, Smurfit Kappa Nederland, and Smurfit Kappa Participations.
