、ii BSI 03-1999 Foreword This Subsection of Part 3 of this British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Basic Data and Performance Criteria for Civil Engineering and Building Structures Standards Committee. The terms included in this Subsection are considered relevant to building and

、 civil engineering. In particular, it does not cover terms and definitions dealing with the communications aspects of fire precautions and prevention which are specifically excluded from all Parts of this standard. For definitions of more specialized terms for the subjects covered, reference should

、be made to the following standards. For communications: BS 3527, Glossary of terms used in data processing. BS 4727, Glossary of electrotechnical, power, telecommunication, electronics, lighting and colour terms. and the definitions clauses in: BS 6450, Private branch exchanges for connection to the

、 British Telecommunications public switched telephone network. BS 6450-1, Specification for general requirements. BS 6506, Code of practice for the installation of private branch exchanges for connection to the British Telecommunications public switched telephone network. For intruder alarms: the de

、finitions clauses in: BS 4737, Intruder alarm systems in buildings. BS 5979, Specification for direct line signalling systems and for remote centres for intruder alarm systems. The definitions in this Subsection of terms that also occur in the above standards are technically equivalent to any defini

、tions of them given in those standards. A general introduction to and explanation of this glossary is given in Part 0 of this standard which itemizes the Parts, Sections and Subsections into which this glossary is divided and provides a general alphabetical index of all the terms in the Sections and

、 Subsections already published. Those using individual Sections and Subsections of this glossary are urged to consult Part 0 when doing so. The other Sections of this Part are as follows: The other Subsection of this Section is as follows: Terms and definitions for heating, ventilating and air condi

、tioning are to be found in BS 5643 “Glossary of refrigeration, heating, ventilating and air conditioning terms”, which deals with all aspects of the subjects and to which terms and definitions particularly relevant to building and civil engineering have been added. Terms are listed alphabetically in

、 the index and are referred to by numbers which are found against the term in the body of the Subsection. There they are arranged in a classified order, each term having an individual number consisting of seven digits in two parts, the first of three digits, the second of four. The first three digit

、s represent the number of the Part, Section and Subsection. The fourth digit represents the group of terms, the fifth digit represents the subgroup of terms, and the last two digits represent the place within the subgroup. 3.1Energy sources and distribution 3.3Sanitation 3.4Lighting 3.2.2 Internal t

Alternative terms are given below the preferred terms with the

Terms of more than one word, e.g. “inductive loop”, are written in a direct style, not as “loop, inductive”. The inverted term is included in the i

、ndex with a reference to the direct term. Italicized words in definitions indicate that they are defined elsewhere in this Subsection. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.
