、f this standard is now withdrawn. The scope of BS 5722 has been extended to include fabrics for dressing gowns and other changes have been introduced as a result of discussions concerning current UK legislation. The performance specification in BS 3121 is cited in the Nightdresses (Safety) Regulatio

、ns 1967 (SI 1967 No. 839), and it is expected that BS 5722 will form a basis for a revision of those Regulations. The committee responsible for the publication of BS 5438 has strongly indicated that general performance specifications are not appropriate, may possibly be misleading and should not be

、prepared. Instead of such specifications, it has recommended that individual performance specifications for defined end uses be produced. For that reason, this standard is limited in application to fabric and fabric assemblies for use in sleepwear and dressing gowns. It is essential that both profes

、sional and home makers of garments are aware that the use of certain trims, accessories and sewing threads can have an adverse effect on the flammability of a garment. The use of different fabrics to produce a multi-layer garment can also have a similar effect and if such a design is to be used, it

、is important to test the fabrics in the same combination as they will be used. If a degree of protection from flame is required, as much care is necessary with the design of the garment as with the main fabric. The importance of design is stressed in Shirley Institute Publication S17 “The flammabili

、ty of apparel fabrics and assemblies”, in PD 2777, and in the Standards Association of Australia publication AS 1249 “Childrens night clothes having reduced fire hazard”. It should be noted that this standard is intended to apply to fabrics and fabric assemblies used in the manufacture of sleepwear

、for use in normal circumstances. Where the sleepwear is intended for use in circumstances in which garments are frequently worn during daytime by wearers who are partially or completely immobile, different performance levels will often be more appropriate. Attention is drawn to the fact that the fol

、lowing statement is required to be an item of the test report specified in BS 5438. “The results may not apply to situations where there is restricted air supply or prolonged exposure to large sources of intense heat as in a conflagration”. This statement should be borne in mind when use is made of

、this standard. A fabric complying with the requirements of the standard may not give protection against exposure to large sources of heat but it is intended to give protection against rapid flame spread arising from accidental contact with small sources of ignition. Attention is drawn to the Health

、and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and the need to ensure that the tests specified in this standard are carried out under suitable environmental conditions to provide adequate protection to personnel. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of

、British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. 23、-19991 1 Scope This British Standard specifies flammability performance requirements for fabrics, including multi-layer fabrics and fabric assemblies, for use in the production of sleepwear and dressing gowns. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside b

、lity performance 3.1 General 3.1.1 Samples shall comply with the requirements of 3.2.1 or 3.2.2 but if a sample fails to comply with 3.2.2 then the performance requirements of 3.2.1 shall apply, i.e. fabrics may be approved but not failed by the requirements of 3.2.2. Only the face of the fabric sha

、ll be tested, if this is apparent. If it is not apparent, only that face which is shown by pre-testing to spread flame or spread flame the faster shall be tested. NOTE 1Guidance on selection of samples is given in Appendix A. NOTE 2Where garments are to be produced from a fabric assembly or from a m

、ulti-layer fabric, it is essential to test the fabrics in the combination in which they will be used. 3.1.2 Single layer fabrics and fabric assemblies shall be submitted to the appropriate cleansing procedure described in BS 5651, depending on the information given on the care of the fabric, e.g. on

、 the care label or in the garment specification. For multi-layer fabrics or for fabrics composed entirely of pure finish nylon, polyester or modacrylic fibre, i.e. with no added finish, the sample shall be submitted to one cycle only of the appropriate cleansing procedure described in BS 5651, depen

For fabrics to be used in the manufacture of disposable products which are not capable of being cleansed, no durability procedures shall be carried out. 3.2 Performance requirements 3.2.1

、 Three specimens shall be tested in the machine direction and three in the cross direction in accordance with test 3 of BS 5438 using a 10 s flame application time, except that the vertical trip threads shall not be used. None of the six specimens shall sever the 300 mm trip thread in less than 25 s

、. None of the six specimens shall sever the 600 mm trip thread in less than 50 s. If any one of the six specimens tested fails to comply with either performance requirement, then a further six specimens shall be tested. None of the second group of specimens shall fail either of the performance requi

、rements. NOTEAttention is drawn to the procedure for testing short specimens and to the limitations on the use of results from such specimens (see 11.8 and 11.9 of BS 5438:1976). 3.2.2 Three specimens shall be tested in the machine direction and three in the cross direction in accordance with test 2

、 of BS 5438 using a 10 s flame application time. No part of any hole nor any part of the lowest boundary of any flame shall reach the upper edge or either vertical edge of any specimen. If any one specimen does not comply with this requirement then, in accordance with B.5 of BS 5438:1976, either a)

、or b) below applies. a) A further six specimens shall be tested in accordance with test 2 of BS 5438 and all six specimens shall comply with the requirement in the preceding paragraph but if any one specimen fails to comply then a further six specimens shall be tested in accordance with test 3 of BS

、 5438, and the requirements of 3.2.1 shall apply. b) A further six specimens shall be tested in accordance with test 3 of BS 5438, and the requirements of 3.2.1 shall apply. 37、07-1999 4 Identification A fabric for which compliance is claimed with the requirements of this standard shall be supplied with the following information. a) The manufacturers name, trade-mark or other identifying mark. b) The statement “Flammability complies with BS 5722:1984”1). NOTEIt is essentia

、 procedure used. If the fabric is intended for use in the manufacture of disposable products which are not capable of being cleansed, this shall be stated. NOTEAttention is drawn to the fact that any claim referring to the flammability of garments will need to satisfy the requirements of the Nightdr

、esses and Dressing Gowns (Safety) Regulations 1985. Attention is also drawn to the fact that it is essential that any claims concerning the flammability of fabrics satisfy the requirements of the Fabrics (Misdescriptions) Act and any Regulations made thereunder. 1) Marking BS 5722:1984 on or in rela

The accuracy of such a claim is therefore solely the manufacturers responsibility. Enquiries as to the availability of third party certification to support such claims should
