It specifies the requirement

、s for solvent cement for use in jointing thermoplastics pipes and fittings other than those made from polyethylene or polypropylene in non-pressure applications. In drawing up this standard consideration has been given to the discussions being held within Technical Committee 138 of the International

、 Organization for Standardization (ISO) in which the UK has taken an active part. However, the international work is not yet at the stage of a draft proposal. As the evaluation of shear strength, given in Appendix A, is by its nature comparative the test is carried out on unplasticized polyvinyl chl

、oride test pieces. The performance of the cement/pipework joints in service is proven by an elevated temperature cycling test detailed in Appendix C. Attention is drawn to BS 4346-3 which specifies solvent cement for use with joints and fittings used with unplasticized PVC pressure pipes and which i

、s also used with pipe and fittings complying with the requirements of BS 5481. Certification. Attention is drawn to the certification facilities described on the inside back cover of this standard. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of Br

、itish Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. 19、9991 1 Scope This British Standard specifies the requirements for solvent cement, supplied in cans, for the jointing of waste systems complying with the requirements of BS 5255:1976, other than those in sections 4 and 5 covering polypropylene and polyethylene systems. This solvent cement is also sui

、table, along with solvent cement complying with the requirements of BS 4346-3, for jointing products complying with the requirements of BS 4514, BS 4576 and BS 4660. This solvent cement is not suitable for products complying with the requirements of BS 5481 for which only solvent cement complying wi

、th the requirements of BS 4346-3 should be used. NOTEThis Part of this British Standard does not specify the type of cans used for solvent cement, but it recommends a colour for the cans. 2 References The titles of the standards publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back

、 cover. 3 Materials 3.1 The solvent cement shall consist substantially of solvents together with polymers and stabilizers. NOTEThixotropic agents and fillers may also be incorporated. 3.2 The solvent cement shall be capable of application by a brush, and shall contain no lumps or foreign matter. 3.3

、 The manufacturer shall indicate by suitable marking see clause 6 g) that the solvent cement, in unopened cans, has a shelf life of 12 months when stored according to the manufacturers instructions, and shall meet the physical and material requirements of the standard at least to that date. No separ

、ation shall take place which cannot be removed by stirring. NOTEIn the case of thixotropic solvent cements, sufficient time, as advised by the manufacturer, should be allowed after any stirring to redevelop the thixotropy. 4 Testing requirements 4.1 Type tests. Type tests, as given in Table 1, are i

、ntended to prove the suitability of a formulation and method of manufacture. They shall be applied at least once each year of manufacture, or whenever a change is made to the formulation or method of manufacture. 4.2 Batch tests. Batch testing shall be carried out to control the quality of the solve

、nt cement. NOTEA batch is defined as one production lot from a single mix, which may be despatched in a number of smaller cans. The tests to be carried out on a batch shall be as given in Table 1. Table 1 Tests 5 Requirements for physical tests 5.1 Shear strength 5.1.1 When tested by the method desc

、ribed in Appendix A, taking measurements at 24 h and 336 h after assembly, the individual values of five test pieces shall be not less than 1.0 MPa or 3.0 MPa respectively. 5.1.2 When tested by the method described in Appendix A, taking measurements at 24 h after assembly, the shear strength of a te

、st piece from each batch shall be not less than 1.0 MPa. 5.1.3 The 95 % lower confidence limit of the latest 25 batch test results as a maximum, determined by the method described in BS 2846-2, shall be not less than 0.2 MPa below the average 24 h result determined in 5.1.1. 5.2 Film properties 5.2.

、1 When tested in accordance with the method described in Appendix B the solvent cement shall comply with the following requirements. a) The film produced shall be even, continuous and free from lumps and foreign matter. Entrapped air shall not constitute failure. b) The film from a) shall be suffici

、ently flexible to be wrapped around a 25 mm diameter mandrel without developing cracks or splits. 5.2.2 Only one test shall be carried out for each batch. 5.3 Elevated temperature cycling test. When tested in accordance with the method described in Appendix C each cement joint shall show no signs of

、 leakage either during the test or after subjection to a static head of 1.0 m of water for 10 min. When the test joints are examined any reduction of bore shall not be greater than 15 % of the value before the test. NOTEIt is recommended that cans be coloured orange to assist in identification. Solvent cement is available in cans of a variety of sizes which allow f

The accuracy of such a claim is therefore solely

Enquiries as to the availability of third party certification to support such claims should be addressed to the Director, Quality Assurance Division, British Standards Institution, Maylands Avenue, Hemel Hempstead, Herts HP2 4SQ in the case of certification marks ad
