、curity system. The global financial crisis from late-2008 saw US and European countries reduce their consumption of a wide range of products. This led to weaker demand for products made in China and, therefore, the industrys exports dropped 24.7% in 2009 and are expected to continue to decrease by 1

、.7% in 2010. After 2005, the industrys profit margins started to decline, mainly due to rising raw material costs, intense competition among the industrys major companies, and government regulations (public bidding for hospital purchasing). Currently, the general level of medical charges in China is

、 much higher than peoples ability to pay, especially in rural areas. This is caused by the dysfunction of the existing healthcare system and the low coverage of Medicare. With healthcare system reforms and the development of the social security system, especially the implementation and promotion of

、the “New Co-operative Medical Care System“ in rural areas, more urban and rural citizens will be able to afford higher medical-related expenditures, creating a greater potential domestic market for this industry. 26、rance levels or ability to pay applicable fees. Major demand determinants for this industry include healthcare coverage, population age structure, disease rates, prices, income, and insurance levels. The geographic coverage of healthcare services This is particularly important for a developing count

、ry such as China. Healthcare services in China have been unable to fully cover the whole population, especially in rural areas. There are significant levels of unmet demand for medical services, which creates large potential demand for medical products in the future. The age structure of the populat

、ion The older the population, the higher the level of demand for medical services, and medical instruments. Incidence of certain diseases Many medical and surgical instruments are specific for certain diseases. For instance, respiration support and suction instruments are used for pulmonary diseases

、, and neurosurgical instruments are used for cranial or brain diseases. If the incidence rates of such diseases increases, demand for corresponding medical or surgical instruments will grow accordingly. Medical and surgical instrument prices Hospitals are sensitive to prices for medical and surgical

、 instruments for three reasons: (1) They are the major buyers for the products, especially given the intense competition among players in the domestic market; (2) Prices of medical and surgical instruments are incorporated in medical service charges, especially operations. Therefore, hospitals have

、to consider the patients ability to pay for these medical services; and (3) Prices may be affected by government policies or policies adopted by hospitals and other healthcare units. For instance, the government may regulate doctors prescriptions as to using expensive or cheap medical instruments, w

、hereas hospitals might prefer doctors to use expensive medical supplies for the purpose of a high income. As the household disposable income level

、estic and International Markets Analysis Overview Within the Medical, Surgical and Veterinarian Instruments Manufacturing Industry in China during 2009, the value of exports totaled $1.48 billion, down 3.5% from 2008. Exports accounted for 30.7% of industry revenue, down from 53.7% in 2005. The valu

、e of competing imports totaled $730.1 million, up 17.9% from 2008. Imports accounted for 17.9% of domestic demand for the industrys products, down from 38.5% in 2005. Also in 2009, the three largest trading partners of China in the Medical, Surgical and Veterinarian Instruments Manufacturing Industr

、y are the US, Japan and Germany. Exports The major destinations of Chinas exports from this industry during 2009 were: the US (16.6% of total industry exports), Japan (14.8%), Germany (8.9%), the Netherlands (5.8%), Hong Kong (4.7%), Brazil (3.8%), Russia (3.2%) and Italy (2.2%). Exports to Japan ha

、ve maintained strong growth since 2003. However, its share of total export values has decreased continuously. This is mainly due to the faster growth of Chinese exports to other countries, such as the US, Germany and Russia. Exports to Russia have experienced substantial growth since 2003, when Chin

、a and Russia strengthened their strategic trade partnership. The enhanced political relationship has driven the growth in economic communications. Trading between Russia and China reflected the mutual complementary economic structures of the two countries. China imports MARKET CHARACTERISTICS Medica

Imports Major sources of imports into China during 2009 were: the US (37.7% of total industry imports), Japan (18.8%), Germany (10.8%), Singapore (3.8%), Denmark (3.5%), France (2.8%),

、Ireland (2.6%) and Switzerland (2.5%). Imports from many European countries such as Germany, Ireland, the UK, France, Sweden, etc, have witnessed substantial increases since 2003. This is attributed to the strongly developing trading relationship between China and the European Union. The EU has now

、become the largest trading partner for China, while China is ranked second among trading partners of the EU. Given that many products in this industry are high-end and technologically-advanced, developed countries enjoy competitive advantages in international trading. Major Import Sources - 2009 Sou

、mpete with each other on price, quality, marketing networks, branding and technical innovation. Price The price of medical and surgical instruments is an important dimension for competition among the manufacturers in this industry. The major purchasers for this industry are all kinds of hospitals, w

、hich receive low subsidies and inputs from the government. Given the relatively low ability of many Chinese patients to pay for medical services, the relatively low coverage of healthcare services and the low coverage rate of healthcare insurance, hospitals have to consider a reasonable price when purchasing medical and surgical instruments. Domestic manufacturers have the same competitive advantages in labor cost and there is no considerable differentiation in the products that they manufacture. Price competition becomes more important for players that want to
