、 permitted without license from IHS -,-,- UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL INTRODUCTION On February 19, 1981, a new FIRE PROTECTION PROGRAM FOR OPERATING NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS (Appendix R to 10 CFR 50) became effective. This ac

、tion was taken to upgrade fi re protection at nuclear power plants licensed to operate prior to January 1, 1979. One section of Appendix R deals with the specifi cation of certain methods to protect redundant safety trains. One of the specifi ed methods in Appendix R requires the Enclosure of cable

、and equipment and associated nonsafety circuits of one redundant train in a fi re barrier having a 1 hour rating. In addition to the protection of redundant safety trains in nuclear power plants, some municipalities have adopted requirements that, in all buildings where an emergency generator is ins

、talled for protection of life-safety, the feeder conductors from the generator to the emergency panel and any feeders required to operate an elevator shall be protected by a 2 hour enclosure. The requirement for protection of vital electrical circuits during exposure to an external fi re has prompte

、d the development of fi re resistive enclosures or coatings, identifi ed as electrical circuit protection systems. An electrical circuit protective system consists of materials or protective coatings installed around, or applied to, electrical conductors, cable trays, busways, cablebus, conduits, ju

、nction boxes and other electrical conductor raceways. Electrical circuit protective systems are classifi ed with respect to their ability to maintain the integrity of electrical circuits during a standardized exposure to an external fi re. Several factors infl uence the ability of an electrical circ

、uit protective system to maintain the integrity of electrical circuits under fi re exposure conditions. Factors such as the electrical conductor raceway type and size and the severity of the standardized fi re exposure to which the electrical circuit protective system is exposed may be specifi ed by

、 the test procedure. Other factors such as the electrical conductor insulation type, the electrical conductor size and construction type, the percentage of electrical conductor fi ll within the raceway and the temperature of the electrical conductors within the electrical circuit protective system d

、uring normal operation are variables which must be assessed for each application. This Outline of Proposed Investigation describes a standard test method to develop the data necessary for classifying electrical circuit protective systems for specifi c applications. 42、OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL GENERAL 1 Scope 1.1 These requirements cover the fi re test investigation of electrical circuit protective systems of various materials and construction. 1.2 Under these requirements, samples of electrical circuit protective systems are exposed to an extern

、al fi re for a predetermined time, and then to an application of a water hose stream. The following measurements and determinations are made during the fi re exposure and water hose stream tests: a) Measurement of temperature changes within the electrical circuit protective system caused by the heat

、 transfer through the electrical circuit protective system to the electrical conductor or raceway, or both, during the external fi re exposure test. b) Determination of the integrity of the electrical circuit protective system during the external fi re exposure and water hose stream test. c) Determi

、nation of the ability of insulated electrical conductors to maintain electrical circuit integrity at the temperature conditions present within the electrical circuit protective system during the external fi re exposure test and during the water hose stream test. 1.3 The external fi re exposure and w

、ater hose stream test may be cited as the Standard Fire Test, and the performance is expressed in terms of maximum temperature rise within the electrical circuit protective system at various increments of fi re exposure time. 1.4 The external fi re exposure and water hose stream tests may not be rep

、resentative of all fi re conditions; conditions may vary with changes in the amount, nature, and distribution of fi re loading, ventilation, compartment size an confi guration, and heat conducting and dissipating characteristics of the compartment in which the electrical circuit protective system is

、 installed. These requirements provide a relative measure of fi re performance of comparable assemblies under these specifi ed fi re exposure conditions. Any variation from the construction or operating condition tested, such as size, method of assembly, and materials, may substantially change the performance characteristics of the system. 1.5 These requirements also cover sample systems which are subjected to an internal fi re exposure to evaluate their ability to contain fi res originating within the electrical circuit protective system if, for example, the system contains ventila
