、IVConclusion.6 I. IntroductionIn humans daily life, language can help them communicate and transmit information. Besides this language, which is generally called phonetic language, body language such as expression, action etc can also be helpful in communication. In fact, the process of using a kind

、 of language to communicate is a process of developing coherent thought. From the traditional methods of learning English we can find that we always accept information through logic thought of mother tongue and then transform it into English thought to reflect the information of English. This disobe

、ys the objective laws of language formation. The result is many people become “giants” in language test but “dwarfs” in language use. Thus using English as much as possible in the English lessons to create a fine environment of English language thought for the students becomes the trend of English t

、eaching. However, most primary school student meet and study English for their first time, if all the knowledge points are taught in English, they can not understand teachers intentions and can not know what they should do. These may let them feel vacuous or even feel afraid to English learning. Who

、can solve the problem? Here the proper use of body language makes the key function. The American psychologist Albert Malabelon certifies that among the ways people getting the information vision takes 83%. According to this he set up a formula: emotion expression amount to 7% words plus 38% sound pl

、us 55% countenance and action. Here these 55% information are expressed though body language. The dynamic image of body language creates constant sensuousness and passion. So, to the primary school students, body language can motivate their interests, attracts their attention, trains their abilities

、 of direct thought and makes their English study more quickly and easily. What is the definition of body language? Body language, is also usually called posture language or dumb culture, is a kind of special method, which is developed concomitantly with the development of language skills, to express

、 emotion. It is also a kind of silent signals such as bodies, look, and posture that are widely used by humans to exchange information.II. The Classification of body language.2.1 Bearing Language. It means a persons expressional attitude. It can be classified into two kinds.2.1.1 Countenance: Human

、beings happiness, anger, sad and gladness can totally be reflected by the countenance. Though observing the countenance we can understand the inner psychological movement of others. The famous writer Roman Rolland once said, “The countenance is a successful language which has been fostered for sever

The facial expression is one kind of human societys universal language. So,if teachers can utilize the facial expression language to solve the problems whic

Teachers can tell their own interesting expires and humorous stories they know to the students. They also can let the students perform some funn

、y classroom stories or the short dramas. “The education is indeed important, but we do not need the board face to treat it”.2.1.2 Eye contactPeople always say that the eyes are windows of the spirit. From one peoples eyes we can know his or her mirth, anger, approval and disapproval. Eye contact is

、vivid and it can talk. Ralph Waldo Emerson said that the eyes could talk as much as the tongue does. As for teachers, they should let students know that in their eyes there is not only kindness but also graving; there is not only acceptance but also anticipation; there is not only tolerance but also

、 admonition; there is not only denial but also encouragement.2.2 Sign LanguageIt means expressing meanings by postures made by hands. The range of sign language is smaller than the carriage language. But in body language its variation of motions is the most, biggest and quickest. Sign language, whic

A Indicative Sign Language When using things or pictures to teach English, teachers can ask questions with the help of this sign language. B Demonstrating Sign Language The aim of using this language to perform the teaching is to he

DToken Sign Language It is used to describe the appearance of things or humans.2.3 Gesture LanguageIt also can be called actions. It means using bodi

The primary school students study mainly relies on teachers carriage language. With the help of carriage language, teachers can help students think following teachers descriptio

、nsIII. How to understand the functions of body language.3.1 Facial expression Barometer of the primary school English teachingIn body language, humans know facial expressions the most. In the primary school English teaching, teachers facial expressions control students interests in great degree. The

、 stage of primary school is a critical moment for the students to form emotional study. At this stage, students learning activities have great emotional tendency. If the students have strong interests, curiosity and intense desire of seeking knowledge, their attention will be concentrated and perman

Therefore, as a teacher, in order to control the rhythm of the class better, he or she should use look to communicate with every student regularly. Moreover teachers sm

、ile influences students psychology a lot. The students interests have direct connection with teachers. They may like a course just because they like the teacher of that course. In order to give the students more courage and confidence to speak out their ideas theyd better use more smile and body lan

、guage to encourage the students to speak actively. 3.1.2 Using students facial expressions to advance the process of teachingStudents facial expressions can reveal their psychological activities. For the primary school students are at simple psychological stage, through their expressions teachers ca

、n know if they are in positive state or not. If the teachers find hesitation in students eyes, they should stop to help them understand the difficult points. In Harvard University, there is such word: The one role object of education is to have a man on the condition of continually asking questions.

、 It is in such process that teachers knowledge can convert to students. 3.2 Sign Languagethe shortcut of English teachingTeachers should catch the students sprightly and curious characteristics and use body language appropriately to help them comprehend the lessons. Thus students interests are motiv

、ated, their thoughts are enlivened and the efficiency of teaching is improved.3.2.1 Using sign language to express instructions and to organize the English course teachingThe primary school students may feel vacuous if they do not understand the instructions and teaching words. At that time teachers

、 should make use of body language to express meanings. For example, when the teachers want to say “stop”, they can do suspension act which is generally used by the basketball referees. When they want to say “stand up” they can do the action of palms upwards. When they want to say “sit down” they can

、 do the action of palms downwards. The precise sign language will attract students; attentions, motivate their initiatives and stimulate their interests. It can also help them understand the teachers intensions. Thus they will feel that learning English is easy and interesting.3.2.2 Using sign langu

、age and actions to assist teachingThe thought of the primary school students is nimble. A subtle look or a tiny action can arouse furious movement in their hearts. When teachers teach vocabulary, sentences or dialogues, the proper use of body language can help the students understand the content eff

、ectively. It has great auxiliary functions on teaching.3.2.2.1Make use of sign language and actions to teach vocabularyIn the primary school English book there are many words can be expressed by actions directly. Verbs such as clap, sleep, jump, shake, walk, and cut etc. Nouns such as monkey, bird,

、duck, rabbit, and cat etc. Adjectives such as fat, thin, tall, small, strong, and long etc. Using exaggerated expressions can make these words livelier, and the students can grasp the teaching focus better. For example, when teaching “animals” teachers can straighten arms and put them in front of no

、se together and then imitate as an elephant might do. Thus students can guess what word the teacher wants to teach. Some may even shout “elephant”. Then teachers can teach the word “elephant” and the students can master it quickly. When teaching other words of animal teachers can ask some students t

、o perform and others to guess. Integrating words with actions to teach is helpful to students situation memory.3.2.2.2 Make use of sign language and actions to teach commands and sentencesIn the primary school teachers can use body language such as look, emotions, actions, etc to express intentions.

、 For instance, when teachers want to say “No”, they can wave head or tighten up lips. Students can know the meaning of the command.Refers to teaching sentences, without the help of body language, many students can hardly know the meaning. For example:Walk like an elephant. Climb like a monkey.Fly li

、ke a bird. Jump like a rabbit. If teachers use body language to perform these verbs, the students can understand them easily. For another instance:Pour the water. Smell the coffee. Taste the tea. Drink the juice. If these four actions are not expressed by appropriate body language, students cannot mas

、ter them easily. Especially “taste” and “drink” these two words, without using body language, students can hardly distinguish them. 3.2.2.3 Make use of sign language and actions to teach communicative parlances and conversation.Language is a skill, so it needs repeated and effective practice. The fa

、mous linguist Mak Halliday treats communication as the source of language knowledge. The practical linguist Francis Hutcheson believes that students can master a kind of language only through communication. The ultimate aim of language teaching is to train students communication abilities. However,

、the students in the primary school have a common feature. That is simulation. Teachers should make full use of this feature and let them open their mouth to speak English bravely with the help of watching, listening and teachers demonstrations. Teachers can choose sign language to teach. 3.3 Spatial

、 SpaceLanguage is an art and a process. Students study English from the period of listening to it firstly, to the period of touching it latter and finally to the period of using it, they need time and space to digest and assimilate the knowledge. The proper use of body language offers a certain time

、 and spatial time to both teachers and students. In order to achieve the teaching purpose, The proper use of body language treats the students as the core of solving the problems. It lets the students think, comprehend and search independently.3.4. Pay attention to the attentive points when using body language3.4.
