8、er. Lesson 8 The best and the worstJoe Sanders has the most beautiful garden in our town. Nearly everybody enters for The Nicest Garden Competition each year, but Joe wins every time. Bill Friths garden is larger than Joes. Bill works harder than Joe and grows more flowers and vegetables, but Joes g
9、arden is more interesting. He has made neat paths and has built a wooden bridge over a pool. I like gardens too, but I do not like hard work. Well, I said to the manager, there is still some honesty in this world! Lesson 36 Across the ChannelDebbie Hart is going to swim across the English Channe
12、l tomorrow. She is going to set out from the French coast at five oclock in the morning. Debbie is only eleven years old and she hopes to set up a new world record. She is a strong swimmer and many people feel that she is sure to succeed. Debbies father will set out with her in a small boat. Mr. Har
13、t has trained his daughter for years. Tomorrow he will be watching her anxiously as she swims the long distance to England. Debbie intends to take short rests every two hours. She will have something to drink but she will not eat any solid food. Most of Debbies school friends will be waiting for her
14、 on the English coast. Among them will be Debbies mother, who swam the Channel herself when she was a girl.Weather Predict A film crew was in the desert. One day an old Indian went up to the director and said, Tomorrow rain. The next day it rained. A week later, the Indian went up to the director an
15、d said, Tomorrow storm. The next day there was a storm. This Indian is amazing, said the director. He asked the Indian to predict the weather for him. However, after several successful predictions, the old Indian didnt show up for two weeks. Finally the director sent for him. I have to shoot a big scene tomorrow, said the director, and Im depending on you. What will the weather be like? The Indian shook his head. Dont know, he said. Radio is broken.
