In the 1920s he was one the most fa

These days he is best known for the gripping saga that is The Most Dangerous Game.,About the Short Story,The Most Dangerous Game, an adventure tale that pits two notorious hunters against one another in a life-and-death competition, is the story for whi

3、ch Richard Connell is best remembered. First published in 1924, the story has been frequently anthologized as a classic example of a suspenseful narrative loaded with action. Connells story raises questions about the nature of violence and cruelty and the ethics of hunting for sport.,About the Short

4、 Story,The Most Dangerous Game gained favorable recognition upon its initial publication in 1924, winning the prestigious O. Henry Memorial Award for short fiction. Its popularity was further established when the first film version of the story was produced in 1932. Alternately known as The Most Dan

5、gerous Game and The Hounds of Zaroff, the film tampered notably with Connells plot, particularly in the introduction of a female character. The storys theme, that of the hunter becoming the hunted, has become a popular one in other books and films since Connells version appeared.,Type of Work and Ye

6、ar of Publication,“The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story of adventure and suspense that conveys a serious message. It was published in Colliers magazine on January 19, 1924. It won Richard Connell his second O. Henry Award for short fiction.,Setting,The action takes place after the First World W

The story opens in the Caribbean on a Brazil-bound yacht and continues on a mysterious Caribbean island.,Initial Setting,Caribbean Sea, then Ship Trap IslandThe reputation of the island has been built. “Sailors have a curious dread of the place.” According to Captain Nielsen: “This place has an

13、its no pity or sympathy for the animals he hunts. Then, ironically, he himself becomes a hunted animal after he arrives on a mysterious island. Rainsford is the storys protagonist, or main character. Whether his experience on the island changes his attitude toward hunted animals is open to question.

14、,Characters General Zaroff,GENERAL ZAROFF: Russian big-game hunter from an aristocratic family in the Crimea, a Ukraine peninsula that was part of Russia until recent times. Zaroff is bored with killing typical game such as tigers, elephants, and water buffalo. Instead, he hunts the ultimate trophy

15、animal: man. Zaroff, a Cossack commanded a cavalry division in the Russian army until the Bolsheviks revolved in 1917 and installed a communist government that abolished aristocracy and the class system. Zaroff went off then and established a new world for himself on a remote Caribbean island. There

16、 he maintains his aristocratic lifestyle in his palatial home while pursuing his barbaric hobby. He says that Zaroff is a murderer because he hunts people.,Connell uses indirect characterization to develop Zaroff,Zaroff is an excellent hunter No one has survived his game so far. He is no longer challenged by hunting animals. He has read lots of books abou

23、t hunting.,Zaroff is sophisticated and refined. He has read books about hunting that were written in English, French and Russian. He hums a tune from an opera.
