、l Equipment Standards Advisory Committee under the authority of the Printing, Stationery and Allied Trades Standards Committee. This edition specifies three sizes of envelope, as did the 1958 edition, but these metric sizes are slightly smaller than the previous ones. The other principal difference

、between this edition of the standard and the previous one is that banker instead of pocket envelopes are specified since it has been found that these are now more convenient for current filing systems. Hospitals were using a wide range of sizes and qualities of envelope when the standard was first d

、rawn up and no indications have been given since then that the three sizes and two qualities of storage envelopes specified in the standard are insufficient to meet their needs. Accordingly, this edition follows the pattern of the previous standard in this respect. The two grades of material specifi

、ed have been selected to withstand the amount of wear and tear that may be expected in different circumstances in both large and small casualty wards of hospitals, and because hospital authorities are under statutory obligation to retain X-ray films for a minimum period of six years both grades are

、strong enough to give the long life necessary for such storage. This British Standard deals with the general run of machine made envelopes and does not apply to hand-folded envelopes. When it was originally prepared consideration was given to the desirability of specifying thumb holes for envelopes

、without flaps to facilitate the removal of X-ray films from the envelopes. It was felt, however, that some damage to the edges of films might result if they were removed by the fingers, and accordingly thumb holes were not specified. This subject was again given very thorough consideration during th

、e course of the preparation of this revision, as a result of which it was decided that no change should be made. Special gumming or special sizes and shapes other than those specified in this standard, e.g. pocket shaped envelopes and those with thumb holes, can however, be supplied by the manufactu

、rer on request. It will be noted that the sizes of envelopes specified do not correspond with the sizes specified in BS 4264, “Envelopes for commercial, official and professional use (terms and sizes)”. This is because medical X-ray films are normally too large for enclosure in envelopes complying w

、ith the requirements of BS 4264 (other than ones conforming to this standard) and it is essential that they should not be folded or creased. The sizes are related to the standard sizes of film specified in BS 3491, “Sizes of film for medical radiography”. It has been found impracticable in this stan

、dard to specify any detailed requirements for the quality of the gum used in manufacturing the envelopes but it is emphasized that good quality seam gumming is essential. Requirements for printing on the envelope have not been given since this is not generally considered necessary and if it were mad

、e an obligatory part of the standard it would result in increased costs for all users. Where purchasers require printing, details of the form, position and size of this should be stated at the time of ordering. In order to diminish wear and tear on the envelopes it is recommended that users should r

、ound off the corners of X-ray films, if they are not already rounded, before filing. The standard does not specify requirements for envelopes for the despatch of X-ray films by post, but guidance on packaging for this purpose is given in Appendix A. NOTEThe titles of the British Standards

、 referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Sizes The sizes of envelopes for processed X-ray films shall be in accordance with the requirements given in Table 1, subject to a manufacturing tolerance of 3 mm. 3 Shapes The envelopes shall be banker shape, i.e. with the opening

、 on the longer side, either with or without flaps as specified by the purchaser. If with flaps, the flaps shall not be gummed. 4 Material 4.1 The envelopes shall be made from the following materials: Grade 1. M.G. manilla or M.G. pure kraft folded so that the glazed side is innermost; Grade 2. Glaze

、(in its storage envelope) should be packed in a container of sufficient strength to prevent the contents from being bent during transmission. A suitable method of packaging would be to use a stout envelope2) with a stiff back composed of fibreboard, chipboard or strawboard or other similar material,

The packet should bear the words DO NOT BEND written conspicuously in capital letters on the face of the cover above and to the left of the address. 2) A suitable size is 460 mm 380 mm.
