、 08 15:02:02 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 7376:1990 ii BSI 02-1999 Foreword This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Consumer and Contract Goods Standards Policy Committee at the request of the Department of Trade and Industrys Consumer Safety Unit. The pur

、pose of this British Standard is to provide designers, manufacturers, retailers, consumers and other interested parties with performance requirements that should minimize the risks of serious accidents with glass in tables or trolleys. It is anticipated that BS 6250-2 will be amended to require that

、 when glass is included in the construction of a table or trolley, the table or trolley will comply with this new British Standard. The technical committee responsible for this British Standard intends to publish further British Standards concerning glass in or associated with furniture. This Britis

、h Standard calls for the use of test procedures that may be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken by the person carrying out the test. It in no way absolves those responsible for testing from statutory obligations relating to health and safety. A British Standard does not purport

、 to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cove

、r, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 4, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. Licensed Copy: London South Bank University, London South Ban

、 in the construction of tables or trolleys, and takes account of the forseeable use of the table or trolley. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply. 2

、.1 toughened glass glass, the surface of which has been rapidly cooled from near the softening point so that a residual compressive stress remains in the surface after complete cooling NOTE 1This process increases the thermal and mechanical strength of the glass and tends to make it shatter into sma

、ller and less angular fragments than an ordinary glass when it is subject to a breaking stress. NOTE 2Toughened glass is also known as tempered glass. 2.2 annealed glass glass which has been heated to the annealing temperature to remove internal stresses and cooled under controlled conditions NOTE 1

、When broken, annealed glass tends to break into dagger-like shards. NOTE 2Annealed glass is sometimes referred to as ordinary glass. 2.3 laminated glass two or more layers of glass permanently bonded together by one or more interlayers of plastics and considered as one piece of glass NOTEThe fractur

、e characteristics of laminated glass are similar to those of the type of glass present in the laminate. Impact energy can be absorbed by the interlayers of plastics intended to hold together pieces of glass when broken. 2.4 film backed glass glass to which a film of flexible plastics has been applie

、d NOTEThe working surface of film backed glass is the glass surface. 2.5 nominal thickness the thickness of glass prior to edge working or surface decoration 2.6 decorated glass glass, the surface of which has been worked, for example by acid etching or embossing, sandblasting, brilliant cutting or

、engraving, to give a decorative effect (see BS 3447) or has been fired with enamels or screen printed 2.7 cast glass glass manufactured by the rolling process NOTECast glass is also known as patterned glass. 3 Trolleys that contain a heating device All flat glass components of trolleys that contain

、a heating device shall comply with BS 3193. 4 Tables or trolleys that do not contain a heating device but which include glass in their construction 4.1 Edgework and bevelling The edge of glass used in the construction of tables or trolleys shall be edge worked or bevelled (see Table 1 of BS 952-2).

、The edge of laminated or film backed glass shall be protected from moisture. 4.2 Contact with other materials NOTE 1It is recommended that hard materials likely to cause surface damage should not be in contact with the glass. There shall be no metal to glass, stone to glass, or glass to glass contac

、t in tables or trolleys. These materials shall be separated by at least 0.5 mm. NOTE 2Allowance should be made for any difference in co-efficients of thermal expansion of glass and the surrounding components of the table or trolley, having regard to manufacturing tolerances on the dimensions of the

、glass. 4.3 Film backed glass When film backed glass is used in the construction of a table or trolley the glass surface shall be the working surface. 4.4 Support of glass 4.4.1 When the glass is moved to extreme positions in any direction horizontally it shall overlap all supports simultaneously by

、at least 6 mm. 4.4.2 The minimum horizontal area of each support shall be 36 mm2. 4.4.3 When glass is unsupported at its edges, for example in a pedestal table, the table or trolley shall pass the vertical and horizontal static load tests given in BS 4875-5 at test level 2 and the stability tests de

、scribed in BS 4875-6. NOTEThe interpretation of results is explained in BS 4875-5 and BS 4875-6. 29、 4.5.1 General Tables or trolleys incorporating suckers or cups to retain the glass or to provide buffer contact points shall comply with 4.5.3. Other tables or trolleys shall comply with either 4.5.2 or 4.5.3. 4.5.2 Construction 4.5.2.1 Glass not supported over its entire area 4.5.2.1.1 Annealed gl

、ass shall be supported for not less than 50 % of its perimeter; the support shall be in at least two non-adjacent regions and shall be not more than 100 mm from the edge of the glass. 4.5.2.1.2 Toughened, laminated or annealed glass, shall comply with the relevant nominal thickness and relevant BS 6

、206 classification given in Table 1. 4.5.2.1.3 When film backed glass is part of a table or trolley, the table or trolley shall comply with 4.5.3. 4.5.2.2 Glass supported over its entire area 4.5.2.2.1 Glass, which has an area no greater than 1.5 m2, shall comply with the relevant nominal thickness

、given in Table 2. Glass which has an area greater than 1.5 m2, shall be either toughened glass with a nominal thickness of at least 4 mm or laminated glass with a nominal thickness of at least 4.4 mm. 4.5.2.2.2 When annealed glass is part of a table or trolley, the table or trolley, with the glass r

、emoved but a non-structural compensating weight equivalent to that of the glass replacing the glass, shall pass the horizontal static load, vertical impact and horizontal fatigue tests given in BS 4875-5 at test level 3. NOTEThe interpretation of results is explained in BS 4875-5. 4.5.2.3 Nominal th

、ickness tolerance The tolerance on nominal thickness (see 2.5) of toughened, annealed and film backed glass, and of the individual layers of glass in laminated structures, shall be as given in Table 3 when determined by the method described in BS 952-1. The tolerance on nominal thickness of laminate

、d glass shall not exceed the sum of the tolerances of the individual layers of glass in the laminate. Consult the furniture manufacturer, retailer, or agent with regard to obtaining a manufacturing specification of shape for replacement glass quoting the model number, and batch number or date of manufacture of the table or trolley”. This label shall be applied by the furniture manufacturer. NOTE 1

、Where possible this label should not be applied to glass components. NOTE 2The label should not be removed by retailers or by persons delivering the table or trolley. 49、not place very hot or very cold items on the glass surface(s) unless adequately thick table mats are used to prevent such items from coming into contact with the glass. b) Do not sit or stand upon the glass surface(s). c) Do not use the glass as a chopping surface. Do not strike the glass with hard or pointed items. d) When cleaning glass panels use a damp cloth or leather with washing up liquid or soft soap if necessary; do not use washing powders or any other substances containing abrasives since these substances scratch glass.” Nominal thicknessTolerance on nomi
