、haracteristics of a switch in a given state as the activation energy is varied. The measurement is conducted to ensure that the switch states are stable and insensitive to variations in the applied activation energy. 1.2 General description The activation energy is varied about its nominal value whi

、le the optical characteristics (attenuation and return loss) are measured. The activation energy is continuously varied between a minimum and maximum level described in the detail specification. The control stability is determined by measuring the optical characteristics of the switch and expressed

、as a range between the maximum and minimum values for a number of cycles defined in the detail specification. The control stability will, in general, be different for each different switch state. 1.3 Normative reference The following normative document contains provisions which, through reference in

、 this text, constitute provisions of this section of IEC 1300-3. At the time of publication, the edition indicated was valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this section of IEC 1300-3 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the m

、ost recent edition of the normative document indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International Standards. IEC 875-1:1992, Fibre optic branching devices Part 1: Generic specification. 2 Apparatus The following apparatus and equipment are required to perform t

、his measurement. 2.1 Optical source (S) The source shall be sufficiently stable over the time required to perform the measurements. The source shall be capable of producing the spectral characteristics defined in the detail specification (both wavelength and spectral width). 2.2 Excitation unit (E)

、This is a special launch fibre or imaging system designed to achieve the required launch conditions. 2.3 Branching device (BD) This is a four-port branching device capable of being used at the wavelength of the optical source and has known transfer coefficients at that wavelength. 2.4 Temporary Join

、t (TJ) This is a method, device or mechanical fixture for temporarily aligning two fibre ends into a reproducible, low-loss joint. It may, for example, be a precision V-groove vacuum chuck, micro manipulator, or a fusion or mechanical splice. The stability of the temporary joint shall be compatible

、with the measurement precision required. 2.5 Detector A detector shall be used which has sufficient dynamic range to make the measurement. The detector shall be linear over the optical power levels expected to be encountered. Any detector non-linearity contributes directly to measurement error. The

、detector shall have a sufficient active area and be placed sufficiently close to the output to capture all of the light emitting from the output fibre of the switch to be measured. 2.6 Reference fibre (RF) A fibre of the same type as the pigtail fibre of the specimen. When required, its length, dime

、nsional and optical parameters shall be specified in the detail specification. 35、e component and that reflected from the component along the incident path with the optical power incident on the component and along the fibre. This is accomplished through repeated measurements which may be facilitated by the use of automated data acquisition. 3.1 Pre-condition the specimen as spec

、ified. 3.2 Configure the measurement as shown in Figure 1. When setting up this measuring arrangement, care should be taken to interconnect all fibre components and interfaces so that the return loss from these interfaces is high and stable. Procedures to reduce the reflected power from the detector

、s (D1) and (D3) and the temporary joints (TJ) to an acceptable level shall be used and specified in the detail specification. 3.3 Measure the transfer coefficients of the branching device BD in accordance with IEC 875-1. The source (S) for these measurements shall be the same as that used in the mea

、surement set-up of Figure 1. 3.4 After ensuring the stability and repeatibility of the measurement set-up, record power levels P1, P2, and P3. 3.5 Remove the fibre length L1 from the set-up and replace it with the pigtailed component assembly as shown in Figure 2. The device under measurement (DUT)

、shall be assembled in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Particular attention should be given to the cleaning instructions and to the use of any required index matching materials. 3.6 After ensuring the stability of the temporary joints, record, and( is ideally unchanged from P3). 3.7 C

While the activation energy is varied, record the maximum and minimum values of a and ar. 3.10 The control stability for a particular switch setting is given by: where the m
